South Coast Nostalgia at The Waffle House: A South Coast Classic You Must Try!
The South Coast drive usually brings a sense of nostalgia, but pulling into Ramsgate to visit The Waffle House always feels like a intentional stop. Tucked right between the estuary lagoon and dense coastal forest, this location has been a coastal fixture since 1957, when it first opened as the Teahouse of the Blue Lagoon. It took on its current identity back in 1991, and stepping onto the grounds today, you immediately get why it has stood the test of time.

We took a table on the open-air deck surrounded by indigenous trees and reeds. As we settled in, bright yellow weaver birds were actively weaving their nests in the branches right beside our table, a quiet, incredible detail that instantly separates this spot from a standard lunch run. The layout flows naturally from a light-filled central pavilion down to garden pathways that lead directly toward the lagoon and the onsite deli.

While Belgian waffles are the main draw, the kitchen doesn't box you in. They handle alternative options brilliantly with gluten-free, dairy-free, and egg-free batters made from scratch. We started our lunch with a savory gluten-free waffle topped with chicken and mayonnaise, balanced with pickled gherkins, micro greens, and a extra layer of melted cheese.

Sitting alongside it, we also ordered the Durban chicken curry. Served over fragrant basmati rice with traditional sambals and chutney, the spice profile was deep, rich, and intensely comforting, a great reminder that their kitchen excels well beyond sweet plates.

For dessert, we went straight for the classic Banoffee waffle, baked fresh and topped with sliced bananas, warm grilled tones, and a velvety caramel sauce. We ordered an extra warm jug of caramel sauce alongside double cream, pouring it over the waffle right at the table. Paired with a thick, hand-spun coffee milkshake and a fresh espresso, it was the exact kind of indulgent, slow-paced afternoon treat you hope for on the coast.

Before heading off, we walked down the stone path to their estate deli. It is packed with everything used in their kitchen, from house-made chili sauces and preserves to boxes of frozen waffles, including gluten-free and dairy-free packs, so you can stock your freezer for home. Guided by our server's incredible local knowledge, the entire visit felt effortless, personal, and deeply rooted in South Coast charm.
