Returning to the Indaba Hotel, an unmatched sanctuary in the heart of Fourways.

Few destinations manage to seamlessly balance heritage, genuine warmth, and multi-layered luxury like the Indaba Hotel, Spa & Conference Centre. Tucked into the lush greenery of Fourways, Johannesburg, this iconic estate feels less like a city stay and more like an expansive sanctuary designed for intentional living, immersive dining, and deep rest.

We recently had the pleasure of checking in for a two-night immersion across the property, experiencing its evolving culinary spaces, wellness journeys, and bespoke masterclasses. What we discovered was an establishment that consistently sets the benchmark for South African hospitality.

A Sanctuary in the City: The Deluxe Stay

From the moment we arrived, the check-in process was effortless, professional, and genuinely warm, setting the tone for what turned out to be world-class service throughout our entire stay.

A spacious hotel guest room featuring a king-size bed with a green accent wall, a wooden work desk, and a seating area at Indaba Hotel Spa and Conference Centre in Johannesburg.

We checked into the newly appointed 8th Block Deluxe Rooms, surrounded by the property’s manicured gardens, quiet water features, and towering trees. The room itself is designed for refined comfort: crisp, high-thread-count linens, a spacious dressing table bathed in natural light, a dedicated workspace, and a well-stocked coffee station. The bathroom is a standout, featuring a generous rainfall shower and eco-friendly luxury amenities. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a bottle of wine alongside a curated treats box packed with artisanal fudge, biltong, and mixed nuts, a thoughtful gesture that immediately made us feel at home.

African Dining at Chief’s Boma

Friday evening led us to the world-renowned Chief’s Boma restaurant for an outdoor buffet experience rooted in tradition and atmosphere. Set beneath the stars, the dining space centres around authentic African flavours, complete with live drumming and vocal performances that transform dinner into a captivating cultural event.

The feast itself is vast and meticulously prepared: cooked-to-order game steaks, rich curries, authentic stews, fall-off-the-bone ribs, succulent lamb, and a build-your-own stir-fry station. The dessert buffet rivals specialised bakeries, offering traditional sweet treats alongside modern classics. Paired with warm, intuitive service, it remains one of the most memorable dining setups in the city.

Restorative Wellness at Mowana Spa

Saturday morning was dedicated to pure rejuvenation at Mowana Spa for the Makoya Morning Retreat. Set amid trickling streams and lush foliage, the spa transports you into an outdoor oasis where the noise of the city completely disappears.

Our morning began with a plated breakfast from their à la carte menu, complemented by a fresh continental buffet. We opted for the Vegan Bowl, a vibrant mix of couscous, avocado, tofu, balsamic-glazed spinach, fresh cocktail tomatoes, and seeded health bread and the Classic Eggs Benedict, perfectly poached and served on delicate English muffins with crisp bacon and velvety Hollandaise.

The treatment journey itself was deeply restorative, delivered by a team whose attention to detail is remarkable. Moving between open-air pampering decks and serene treatment rooms, the experience leaves you feeling completely grounded, physically re-energised, and mentally clear. It is easy to see why Mowana continues to win top honours year after year.

Curated Pairings & Craft Spirits: The Tasting Room and Gin School

By late afternoon, we moved on to the Indaba Tasting Room for a curated Wine & Chocolate Pairing. Transporting guests into a space that feels reminiscent of a Cape vineyard estate, the sommelier guided us through a selection of fine wines paired with artisanal chocolates designed to unlock subtle flavour nuances.

Transporting guests into a space that feels reminiscent of a Cape vineyard estate, the sommelier guided us through a selection of fine wines paired with artisanal chocolates designed to unlock subtle flavour nuances.

From there, we stepped into the Indaba Gin School, a highlight of the itinerary. Housed in a space that feels like a blend between a state-of-the-art laboratory and a luxury apothecary, this hands-on masterclass takes you through the history, science, and craft of spirit distilling. Guided by an expert distiller, we selected botanicals, measured profiles, and distilled our very own custom bottles of gin to take home, all while enjoying a continuous flow of gourmet tapas.

Returning to our room that evening, the team had arranged a wonderful surprise: a bottle of chilled champagne, fresh treats, and a rose-petal heart across the bed. It is precisely these unprompted touches that separate standard luxury from true hospitality.

Sunday Bubbly Brunch at Epsom

We wrapped our stay on Sunday morning with the Bubbly Brunch at Epsom Restaurant. The dining room was beautifully styled, offering an expansive spread of baked goods, warm main dishes, and fresh salads. The absolute centrepiece of the morning was the dedicated Oyster Station and bespoke Champagne Cocktail Bar, a decadent, relaxed way to toast to the end of a remarkable weekend.

Beyond the facilities, what truly sets this property apart is its people. With staff members who have been part of the Indaba family for anywhere from 15 to 40 years, the level of intuitive, heart-led service across every single department. From front desk to the restaurants and spa is unmatched. Combined with seamless shuttle transfers across the estate, eco-conscious operations, and beautiful grounds, the Indaba Hotel delivers a seamless, high-end escape.

We would like to say a special thank you to the Indaba Hotel, Spa & Conference Centre and their entire amazing team for an unforgettable stay and incredible experience. We look forward to visiting many more times and raising our glasses with you again soon! 🙌
