Multiple Helivate helicopters lined up inside the modern hangar at Jack Taylor Airport in Krugersdorp, including the black R66 Turbine ZS-HMK and the colourful Robinson R44 ZS-RYM number 44.

From the moment we arrived at Jack Taylor Airport in Krugersdorp, the Helivate team welcomed us with genuine warmth. Our pilot for the day was Rory Root, a remarkably composed 24-year-old, fully qualified pilot and instructor. He walked us through the helicopter with clear, unhurried explanations of every safety protocol and detail. The aircraft itself was an absolute stunner, polished and pristine.

Luggage was loaded for us, headsets went on, and suddenly we could speak freely while the world outside prepared to fall away. Take-off is a sensation unlike any other, a trippy, exhilarating lift that feels both weightless and completely secure. Within moments, we were soaring over the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve, watching zebras and wildebeest move across the landscape below. It is a completely new perspective, one that makes everything familiar feel brand new.

The flight to Sibani Lodge lasted barely eight minutes. Comfortable, quiet, and impossibly convenient. Rory kept us informed the entire way, explaining every sound and movement so we always felt completely at ease. We touched down at the main lodge, took a quick look around, then lifted off again for a short hop to the private villa, where the Sibani team was already waiting with the same warm hospitality.

The following day Rory returned for our departure, this time in another striking blacked-out Helivate Helicopter. Another seamless safety briefing, luggage handled, and once more we were airborne for the short, perfect flight home. Claudia sat up front with the full first-person view through those expansive windows, instruments, controls, the sensation of pure vertical take-off and landing, and the surreal feeling of those smooth, confident banks that give you a gentle taste of G-force.
