There are very few places that can completely transport you the moment you step out of your car, but Greensleeves Medieval Kingdom is one of them. Nestled in the Sterkfontein valley, this third-generation owned and operated estate doesn’t just put on a show, it creates a world where the modern grind simply ceases to exist. We recently returned to the Kingdom to see how the feast has evolved, and it remains one of the most intentional and high-energy nights out in Gauteng.
The experience begins long before the first course is served. To truly inhabit the era, a visit to Merlin’s Costume Hire is a must. With over 550 costumes to choose from, the transition from 2026 to the Middle Ages is seamless. Once you are suited and booted in your finest medieval attire, the heavy wooden doors open to a candlelit hall filled with the sounds of live music and the palpable energy of a kingdom in full swing.
The hospitality here follows a rhythm that feels both ancient and perfectly timed. The entertainment is live, loud, and engaging, led by a cast that understands the fine line between dining and theatre. It is a rare thing to find a venue that manages to be this spirited while maintaining a premium level of service.
Then, there is the feast. Goodness is guaranteed here, and the menu remains a masterclass in hearty, traditional flavours. We started with the signature Goblet of Mead, a raw honey brew that sets the tone for the night, paired with hand-made Trenchermen Pita Breads covered in garlic butter. The pottage (a rustic vegetable soup) followed, served with home-baked bread that felt like a hug in a bowl.
The main event is a massive spread of Spit Roasted fall of the bone, succulent Chicken and a slab of tender to the tooth Roast Beef, which is served with "earthapples," seasonal roasted vegetables, and a truly flavoursome pan gravy. It is an "eat as much as you like" affair, but the quality never wavers for the sake of quantity. We finished the night with Giant Chocolate Chip Cookies, served with vanilla ice cream and a sharp berry coulis.
Beyond the food and the fanfare, what makes Greensleeves truly "Officially Approved" is their heart. They operate a "Kindness Pot", a large copper pot where fines are collected from those who dare to break the King or Queen’s rules. In 2025 alone, they collected and donated a MIND-BLOWING R82,000 to various charities.
It is proof that this legacy is built on more than just entertainment; it’s built on community.
